Under Review: Tom Waits: 1983-2006 is currently available for free streaming on Youtube. It deals with the beginning of Tom’s cult status as the Junkyard-king of Music and continues into his acting roles and later career (I forgot how great the ‘moral traffic-light’ scene was from The Fisher King).
Yes, Tom’s early drunken piano style of music is impressive, heartbreaking, and a solemn view of barfly culture, but the Kathleen Brennan influence creates a new monster capable of reaching into the depths of abyss and ripping out diamonds. He is, in my opinion, all that is left from the Captain Beefheart/Zappa style of music.
If you have an hour and a half, this doc is a great way to unwind after work.
Aquarium Drunkard, who posted the original link to this documentary, also celebrates William Elliot Whitmore’s new album Field Songs with a special session featuring two covers.
